The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has called for
musicians in the country to compose and record a theme song for the 2025
general elections.
In a statement MEC says, among others, the songs should be
in Chichewa.
“MEC has the mandate to promote public awareness of
electoral matters through the media and other appropriate and effective means
and to conduct civic and voter education on such matters”
“MEC is, therefore, calling for proposals from interested and talented musicians to compose and record the official theme song for the 2025 General Election.
“The theme song should be one to capture the electoral mood
and essence of election in preparation for the 2025 General Election.
“We are looking for an original electoral theme song that;
a. Reflects the values of democracy, unity and elections. b. Captivates and
inspires listeners of all backgrounds to participate in the election. c. Is
catchy, memorable and easy to sing along. d. Is suitable for live performances
and recording e. Represents the diverse cultural heritage of Malawi,” reads the
statement in part.
According to the statement, “applicants should indicate or
attach proof that they: - (a)Are dully registered in accordance with the Malawi
laws i.e. Registrar of Companies, Malawi Revenue Authority, Public Procurement
and Disposal of Assets Authority (PPDA); (b)Have relevant experience in the
field of music. (c)Are well-structured and well known at national level.
(d)Have copyright and are original composers to the song.”
