The National Registration Bureau- NRB, has extended the validity of all expired national IDs until January 1st, 2027.
In a statement, the bureau said the measure aims to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services.
Among others, the authorities said the extension provides the NRB time to print and distribute around 2 million renewed ID cards.
Meanwhile, the bureau has instructed all public and private institutions to continue accepting expired IDs as valid identification for all transactions.
However, while commending the move, Lucky Mbewe- a social commentator suggested the need for national IDs to have unlimited validity.
Mbewe argued that renewal of the IDs has proved to be costly and time consuming for the citizenry, hence the suggestion.
