A woman from Chilipa in Mangochi, Zynab Sosten, has asked police at Chilipa Police Unit to release her husband, 35-year-old Mphatso Benson, who was arrested for beating her over allegations of misusing maize flour.

According to police, Mphatso assaulted his wife so badly that she suffered a fractured arm and lost two teeth. The attack happened after he accused her of mismanaging maize flour, which is currently very expensive and scarce in many homes.

Zynab spent about a week in hospital receiving treatment for her injuries.

However, after the arrest of her husband on 23 November, she returned to police asking for him to be released, saying the family is struggling to survive without him.

“I was just angry when I reported him to police. Please release him,” she pleaded.

Police have rejected her request, saying the case is serious and must proceed according to the law.
