Mighty Mukuru Wanderers kick off their Zamadolo Airtel Top 8 title defense campaign this afternoon as they take on Silver Strikers in the first leg of the quarter-finals at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

This marks the beginning of the sixth edition of the tournament, with teams vying for the prestigious K17 million Airtel prize money.

Last season, the Nomads claimed the title in impressive fashion, not conceding a single goal throughout the tournament. However, they are fully aware that their clash against the two-time champions, Silver Strikers, will be a challenging encounter on their opponent's home turf.

Speaking in a pre-match interview, Wanderers coach Mark Harrison expressed his team's anticipation for the game. He emphasized the importance of securing a positive result in the first leg and acknowledged the tough battle they will face against a strong opponent.

On the other side, Silver Strikers coach Pieter De Jhong expects a difficult match but believes that playing the first leg at home provides them the advantage to achieve a favorable outcome.

De Jhong also confirmed the return of midfielder Chimwemwe Idana to the starting lineup, highlighting his importance to the team's strategy and mentioning his recent absence due to personal circumstances.

Both teams possess key players who will play pivotal roles in the match. For Silver, forward Adiel Kaduya, Chikondi Kamanga, Chinsisi Maonga, and Zebron Kalima stand out. Meanwhile, the Nomads boast a talented arsenal including Vincent Nyangulu, Gaddie Chirwa, Francisco Madinga, Wisdom Mpinganjira, and captain Stanley Sanudi.

The fixture holds significance for both teams, as Silver still remembers their defeat against Wanderers that ended their unbeaten run in the league, while the Nomads carry the disappointment of their loss to Silver in the first edition final through penalties.

Other quarter-final matches in the tournament will see Bullets facing Civil Service United, Blue Eagles taking on Moyale Barracks, and Kamuzu Barracks entertaining Mafco FC.

As the competition unfolds, football enthusiasts eagerly await the thrilling clashes and standout performances from these top teams fighting for victory.
