Government Bans Pork In North


Animal health authorities have enforced a ban on the movement, slaughter and consumption of pig products in Mzuzu and some parts of Mzimba and Nkhata Bay.

It follows an outbreak of the African swine fever.

The outbreak has affected Zombwe and Emsizini Extension Planning areas in Mzimba and Kavuzi and Chikwina in Nkhata Bay.

According to Deputy Director of Animal Health and Livestock Development in the ministry of agriculture, Gilson Njunga, about 115 cases have been reported in 13 piggery units and over 68,000 pigs are at risk of infection.
