A new movie, ‘Welcome to Maula Prison’, whose trailer has earned massive attention from film lovers and art enthusiasts is expected to be premiered on May 3 in Lilongwe.

The movie, mostly set in the confines of Maula Prison in the capital Lilongwe, among others, is an attempt at demystifying the notion that prison is a place for punishment.

‘Welcome to Maula Prison’ is a third production by 4Kaya—managed by musician Kendall Kamwendo—after last year’s blockbuster, ‘School Days’.

“As the team was coming up with this movie, they wanted to dive into spaces that Malawians don’t usually dive into. So, asking and finding out stories of the people that are in prison, we really did want to also bridge the gap that is between the community as well as people that are within the prison premises,” said Désirée Namachotsa, 4Kaya publicist.

She said it has cost her company over K40 million in production.

Apart from 4Kaya resources, production of the movie has also been supported by Universal Service Fund (USF) under Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) with K17 million kwacha as part of promoting creation of content for Malawian society on media platforms.
