Human rights lawyer, Grace
Malera, has been hired by the Public Appointments Committee (PAC) of Parliament
as new Ombudsman – replacing “iron lady” Martha Chizuma who is now director general
of graft-busting body the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB).
According to PAC chairperson, Joyce Chitsulo, Malera scored 22.6 out of 25.
Apart from holding the post
of Action Aid Malawi executive director until her appointment, Malera has been
Malawi project director at EngenderHealth and Team Leader of Tithetse Nkhanza.
She describes herself as “a
human rights protector, gender and development practitioner, lawyer,
socio-legal researcher and feminist.”
