Pius Nyondo – Malawi Heat
Rising teen-aged
dancehall artist Jay Jay C aka Juma Chitsonga has
challenged fellow jacks in the trade to centre on creativity and desist from
“beef,” arguing it will not do the country’s music industry any good.
Apparently, the teenager,
19, was referring to the verbal diarrhea two of Malawian popular urban artists
– Piksy and Onesimus – exchanged via the country’s news portals.
According to the issue,
which Malawi Heat closely followed, Onesimus expressed
outbursts following Piksy’s recent hit Mthunzi on alleged grounds that the song
was a hitter at Malawi’s sensational prophet Shepherd Bushiri who also happens
to be Onesimus’ boss.
Piksy had said in defense
that the song “did not single out anyone.”
In retaliation, Onesimus
dropped a hit ‘Open Letter,’ of which he said had been composed to reach out to
his old friends so that “they turn to God.” But analysts concluded the song was
simply a counter to Piksy’s song.
Aside this incident,
cases of ‘beefing’ are not a new phenomenon among Malawian musicians –
especially urban.
But Jay Jay C,
who has so far recorded with Nepman, Nesnes and Gaffar, among others, said
there was no way beef would propel the country’s urban music industry ahead.
“Beef won’t do us any
good,” he said. “It is retrogressive.”
He said it was possible
for musicians in the industry to hit it big without necessarily chirping in
beef or “dirty talk” in their music.
“There are a lot of
things to talk about. Plenty of them. It is just a matter of one getting
focused as well as making sure they think outside the box,” said Jay Jay C.
Fondly called the junior
dancehall engineer at Mabilinganya Empire – founded by ultra-talented rapper
Mafunyeta – JayJay C said he was looking forward to a promising
music career ahead.
“I want to be remembered
as someone who did some nice music that was worthwhile to the society,” he
said.
