Dede Kamkondo Poetry Contest for Youthful Malawian Writers: $100 top prize


The Wisdom Dede Kamkondo Foundation (WDKF) is pleased to announce
the maiden edition of the Dede Kamkondo Poetry Contest.


A glamorous, multi-award winning writer, Dr Wisdom Kamkondo was one of the most prolific Malawian writers of his time - commonly known by his pen name Dede.


He is best remembered for his poetry, short stories, novels, plays and children’s books. His novels such as Children of the Lake, Truth Will Out and For the Living continue to be read all over the world and can be found in U.S libraries, local bookshops and at the Michigan State University where he went in 1995 to pursue his doctoral studies.


Wisdom died peacefully around midnight on the 12th of March, 2006.


The contest is in memory of Wisdom who tirelessly worked towards uplifting the reading and writing culture in Malawi.


Guidelines
  • Entrants must be Malawian citizens aged not more than 35, living within and outside Malawi.
  • Poem must be entrant’s own work and must not have been previously published.
  • Do not submit more than one poem.
  • Poem must not exceed forty lines (brevity will also be considered).
  • Poems must be sent as attachments with the subject: ‘Dede Kamkondo Poetry Contest.’
  • A short biographical note of less than fifty words should be sent in the body of the email.
  • Submission opens 1st October, 2013.
  • Deadline: 31st October, 2013.
  • Announcement of the winners will be made three weeks after the closing date.
  • Submission is free.
  • A judging panel to select the winning entries will be announced on 2nd November, 2013.
  • First prize is $100, second prize is $30 and third prize is $20.
