Drunk Malawi Police Officer shoots driver for no reason, beaten in BT

A 26-year-old driver identified as Steven Edward from Makalani Village in the area of Traditional Authority Somba in Blantyre District was on November 26th, 2022 shot on his left knee by Sgt Luka Naphiyo, 28, of Mangulama village Traditional Authority Nkalo in Chiradzulu district.

A police report has confirmed of the incident saying that it happened around 15:30hrs at Blantyre Market in the City of Blantyre.

It indicated that SGt Naphiyo was assigned to work at Mandala State resident Guest House from the shift of 12:00hrs to 18:00hrs but surprisingly at about 15:30hrs the officer went to Blantyre Market where Chilobwe-Blantyre minibuses park whilst drunk and carried with him a K2C rifle which had 10 rounds of ammunitions.


"The rank started shooting in the air with his rifle K2C and this made drivers who were there to be scared and dispersed while in the process of his acts he shot the victim on the knee," the report said.

It added that the victim fell down and later the rank advanced to the victim and pointed at him saying he would finish him but fortunately the ammunitions which were in the magazine were all used.

"Well wishers grabbed the rank and snatched the K2C riffle and later angry people started beating the rank fortunate enough he was rescued by some drivers who took him to Blantyre Police Station," the report highlighted.

Meanwhile, the victim was referred to QECH where he was attended to so too with the accused for treatment before being placed in custody to answer the offence he has committed.
