Understanding Mlaka Maliro

End last week, Malawi's music royalty, the insanely talented songwriter, composer and singer turned pastor, Mc Donald Mlaka Maliro made some scathing remarks while perfoming live on Mibawa Television at Mibawa Multi-purpose Hall downtown Blantyre.

He said: "If you touch my wife, you touch me. And I will come for you."

This statement has caused a social media frenzy and an uproar with people having different opinions on what appears to be a warning.

I am not here to discuss the nitty gritties of the genesis of that statement and the accompanying anger.

I am here to make you understand that Mlaka is a protector of those he hold so dear, especially his wife of his youth, Bernadetta Mlaka Maliro.

To appreciate Mlaka Maliro's protective and defensive traits here is a story of the Dzanja Lalemba hit-maker some many eons ago where he defended a secondary school girl he didn’t know from the jaws of harassing police officers.

In the early 2000s at the peak of his career, Mlaka Maliro was in a minibus from Balaka to Blantyre alone, sitting in front seat of the minibus.

Upon reaching Zalewa roadblock, the minibus stopped for security checks and everyone has had to alight from the minibus.

Everything and everyone was okay save for one girl, a secondary school student from New Era Girls Private Secondary School. She was detained and being reprimanded by the police for wearing a 'comourflage' and they were demanding that she take off the camouflaged clothes.

Mlaka, seeing what was happening to the young girl and he decided to act and stop the police brutality for once and for all - afterall, he was Mlaka the superstar.

So, he put his life on the line to protect the defenceless and vulnerable girl at police's mercy.

With extra-bravado, he went to the police and stood up for the girl he didn’t know. He told the police she was his wife and that the camouflage she was wearing was his, a gear he wears at his shows.

Mlaka argued with the police. He told them off. Told them, he would never allow them to harass his 'wife' and that if they were harassing his 'wife' then they were harassing him.

Mlaka became physical with the police stopping the police from undressing the young lady and Mlaka being a famous musician that he was, the crowd joined in and the police gave in to Mlaka's demands.

Mlaka and the young lady got back into the minibus but sat separately with the former sitting in front and the latter at the back.

Mlaka protected a girl he never knew.

As they say, the rest is history for that
girl is now (and forever) Mlaka's wife and mother of children.

So, if Mlaka fought for this girl when she didn’t know, how far can he fight to protect her now that she's his other-half?

So, do you understand Mlaka's action?

Mlaka will always defend his own.

Mlaka and his wife have come a very long way. They have been through thin and thick together. Here is a woman who has been by Mlaka's side even when the chips were down.

It is, therefore, understandable why Mlaka is so resolute and steadfast, ready and sturdy to defend the love of his life, after all a good man is supposed to defend and protect his woman. No matter the circumstances.

By the way, I for one, think Mlaka should let go of whatever or whoever it is that he is vexed with, I mean the one or the ones who are trying to 'touch' or touched his wife and move on with his old but new flame, music.

However, I must say, because I don't know what really happened, I am not sure what's the best way for Mlaka.

All I know is that war does not build villages but I also know that there would be no villages if women are not protected by those who love them.

It's a catch 22.Understanding Mlaka Maliro
