About K.3.5 million is
required for Malawi to send participants in this year’s edition of Miss and Mr.
Deaf to be held in Tanzania, Malawi National Association of the Deaf (Manad) executive
director, Byson Chimenya, has said.
“Our target is to send six people but, depending on funding, we can even send two to three. We need K3.5 million to cater for travel and registration fees for the six people,” Chimenya said.
Chimenya said the event will
be on October 1, 2021 and that the organisers have pledged to offer food and accommodation.
He said Emmanuel Madanitsa
will represent the country as Mr Deaf with Esnat Lifa featuring as Miss Deaf
whereas Levi Bingu and James Mkwanda will star as Mr Fashion.
“There will be lots of
activities, apart from the beauty pageant. There will also be Mr Fashion. This
is all about empowering young deaf women and men in their respective countries
so that they become confident and good role models as well as a driving force
each in their own way to make positive changes in Malawi,” Chimenya said.
He added: “We plan to travel
on September 25 and return on October 2. We have tried to raise funds but we
have not achieved much. There is nothing and we are just praying that we should
get the support,” Chimenya said.
The country has done well on
the international scene as it holds the Miss Deaf Africa office through
Chimwemwe Kamkwamba, who is also Miss Deaf Africa Malawi.
Recently House of Xandria
also held All Shades of Beautiful Fashion show at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre
which was aimed at giving persons with disabilities the chances to showcase
their talents.
